An Indiana Private
in the Civil War
Patrick Boyle fought as a private in the 75th Indiana Regiment from 1862 until his death in 1864. An Irish immigrant, his story had mostly been lost but has been pieced together from family research and from the discovery of forgotten historical documents written by those who knew and fought with him. Vivid accounts of the battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge are presented. Although Boyle's story will never be complete, this brief account of his life as a man and soldier records the challenges that faced so many people during his time and the courage with which they met them.
Boyle was the father of my great-grandmother, and I was fortunate in writing this short history of him because of the assistance of Marcia Hotopp, the Secretary of the Wells County Historical Society in Indiana, where Boyle lived for a decade.
