About me and my work
As a professional writer I have wide-ranging interests and publications. I have been a science and environmental reporter, a newspaper and magazine editor, a "nonfiction novelist," a writer and maker of documentary and educational films, and for 30 years a university faculty member who led a science communication program. My published books--fiction, nonfiction, biography, screenplays--have been dictated by my own passions and concerns, including the endangered species crisis (A Common Fate) and personal resilience in challenging times (Love Despite the Plague; and An Indiana Private in the Civil War). I am always interested in showing how science may illuminate cultural activities both expected (ocean exploration; environmental disputes) and unexpected (opera; sublime experiences).
I have been published by commercial and scholarly presses, and for smaller personal projects, by my own business, Text & Context. All book titles are available on Amazon.com.
I grew up in Connecticut, have degrees from Yale and the University of Oregon, and since 1975 have lived in western Oregon.
